Locations & Collections
We have a Library / Learning Commons at the St. James Campus and Casa
Loma Campus, an Academic Resource Centre located at Ryerson in the "Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health" and an ESL Library
at the Casa Loma Campus. Link for
locations and hours of operation. Each campus has resources relevant to the programs and courses taught
at that location. Our collections are accessible to all of our students,
regardless of home campus. We operate a full intercampus loan system.

Search the Collection - Library Catalogue
The
On-Line Library Catalogue, called BIBCAT, gives you access to George Brown College's
library
holdings, such as: books, audio/visual media (videos, DVDs, kits), periodicals,
and electronic documents. It is accessible on computers available in each
location and from home through the George Brown College Web page.
Location of books, and availability are indicated, i.e. "CHECKED
OUT", meaning that someone currently has the item. Books, videotapes
and serials (magazines and journal titles) are listed on the catalogue
and can be searched using: Author, Title, Subject, or Keyword searches.
Media Collection
The Media collection is made up of materials such as VHS, DVDs, kits,
audiotapes and CDs, that require special equipment to be used. Not all
formats are available at all locations as each library houses a unique
collection. Titles can be found using the
On-Line Library Catalogue, changing the format to "Videos, DVDs,
Films" or, for a quick
search, link to the
Media Collection page.

Reserve Collection
The Reserve collections are special reference materials or
high-demand books that are placed on Reserve for a limited time, for on-site use
only, for example: text books, teacher"s class notes, etc.. Each campus maintain their own reserve collection. Faculty
should refer to "Faculty Services - Reserve Items" for specific details
on adding items to the Reserve collection. These items must be signed
out from the Help Desk using a library card .
Holds
In the event that the book that you require is checked out by someone
else, you have the option of placing the book on hold for your use through "My Library Account". You will also be able to track your requests, as
well as your other library items, due dates, renew your items, and check
your overdue fines through this feature. For instructions on using this

Interlibrary Loans
Student and faculty have access to Interlibrary Loan services with
other community colleges. Using this service, users may request books that
are not available in the George Brown College Collection. We will arrange
for your requested item to be sent to your closest George Brown College
Library. Link here to search the

Circulation Check-out / Help Desk
Staff are attending the Help desk at all times to help you with the following:

Checking-out of library collection, sometimes called "Circulation". Please note that you should return your items into the "Book Drop".
One is located inside the library, and there is one beside the entrance
door. Please do not leave on counter -- make sure that they go in
the book drop box.

Answering general questions about using the Library / Learning Commons
(Open Access Computer Centre). Questions requiring more assistance are
referred to the Reference / Research Desk

Reference / Research Desk
Staff are attending the Reference / Research desk at all times to help you extract the best information from
the wide range of resources that are available to you. We endeavor to
direct you to the information that you need, when you need it! Reference/Research Desk services include:
- Answering questions about using the Library / Learning Commons (Open Access Computer Centre)
- Assisting in locating study materials
- Assisting in the use of
Library Databases,
including how to access these resources from outside the college (remote
access) (Your
Student
ID/Borrower card is required to use
remote access databases)
- Booking videotapes / DVDs and other Media related items by Faculty
from classroom use.

Computers
Each library has a network of computers available to you for academic
research, including the use of On-line and CD-ROM databases and web-based
resources such as the Internet.
- Casa Loma Library / Learning Commons - 41 Library Research stations, 188 Open Access computers (PC only).
- St. James Library / Learning Commons - 31 Library Research stations, 186 Open Access Computers (120PC, 64 Mac).
- St. James Learning Commons Annex (Room -121) - 99 Open Access Computers (PC only).
- Ryerson Academic Resource Centre (SHE)- 28 Computers
You have the option of downloading to your own computer disk, e-mailing
to yourself, or printing.
Computer Printers and Photocopiers in
the Library/Learning Commons
Computer Printers
The Library / Learning Commons provide printers for use with
computers. We provide access to : laser printers (black & white print),
and colour laser printers.
Specialized printing such as plotters are available at Casa Loma Library /
Learning Commons, where staff will advise you about printing prices.
Photocopiers
Black and white copiers are available in all of our locations for you
to use. The machines print single sided copies. We recommend our users
with bulk copying or who expect to make many copies in the future to make
use of your Photo ID instead of cash.
Student Photo ID as Print/Copier Card
George Brown College student photo ID cards are also used as print/copier cards. Students may also pay cash for prints at the Help desk. Adding money to your Student Photo ID card, and making change may be done at the Help desk. There are also special terminals located in each LLC that allow you to add money to your card. Please be advised that all money added to your student card is non-refundable. Coin-operated and Student Photo ID card-operated photocopiers are available at all of our locations. Study Area
Study carrels/desks are provided throughout the Library/ Learning
Commons for use by students for
individual study. "Quiet Study" rooms are available in both the St. James
and Casa Loma libraries for those requiring total quiet.
Group Study Rooms
Group Study rooms and Computer Group Study rooms are available. Prior booking
at the Help Desk is required. The rooms can be booked by a group, for a maximum of 2
hours per group per day. No double booking is allowed. The reservation
will be be kept open until 15 minutes after the booking time, at which
time the booking will be considered cancelled. Computer Group Study rooms
have a computer available for groups to use. The key can be signed out by
any of the group members. A valid Library/Borrower card is required.
LOFT Adaptive Technology Room
Located inside the St. James Library / Learning Commons is the LOFT
adaptive
